The science includes two main elements: the structure of the objective and the observable verb. First, let’s examine the structure. A good performance-based learning objective consists of three parts. The following examples use the design of training for a hotel guest registration agent, who is responsible for explaining the location of the elevators and the guest’s assigned room.

Condition. The circumstance under which the learner will perform (e.g., “At the conclusion of each guest registration . . .”)

Performance. What the observable performance is (e.g., “. . . the agent will use the hotel map to explain the location of elevators and the guest’s room . . .”)

Criteria. How the performance will be measured, in terms of quality, quantity, and/or time (e.g., “. . . every time”).
